1792 RIDGEMONT RESERVE Barrel Select

The high rye content at Tom Moore/Barton Distillery—that is to say, at DSP-KY-12, a piece of data proudly listed on the back label—ranges from approximately 30 to 35 percent, and there's a healthy dose of malted barley as well. Ths massive small grain charge can't help but come out in the whiskey. The back label further states the "character" as "rich flavor, velvety," and this is true enough. But it's all relative with 1792, because it still stands, however velvety, as one of the more assertive, muscular, hard-nosed chewy and flavorful Bourbons on the shelf. It's a long way from the other super-high rye Bourbon on the market, Four Roses' grain bill of 35% rye—which rivals Tom Moore for rye content yet is impossibly balanced and suave and delicate and refined. There is something, not hot or harsh, but brusque and bruising and firm about 1792—and indeed, about all the whiskeys from Barton. Try Very Old Barton 100 proof six year for a highly affordable Bourbon wallop.

JIM BEAM Distiller's Series

Though described as a new recipe, this Distiller's Edition faithfully presents the Beam family flavor in nose and mouth--that particular meld of corn, earth, sappy oak, and oxidation that, to this reviewer at least, is rather less than welcome. (It tastes like Beam...you know what I mean.) But in midpalate the whiskey really kicks into another gear, with a bloom of minty rye spice and corn confection that is really eye-opening. The spice strides into the lengthy finish with confidence, a flavorsome, rewarding and, yes, new Beam whiskey that is well worth your time and a bit of money. I have enjoyed a good long chaw on this spicy pour, my favorite Beam in some years.—JE

One of the drier Bourbons you’ll encounter. Rowan’s offers much dry, dusty wood on the nose, acceptably enough but perhaps lacking in complexity. The mouth, though, offers a very dry entry with more wood and spice followed by a mid-palate bomb of hard, remorseless rye; like spiced hard candy, barely sweet at all. VERY OLD BARTON 100

The very high rye content comes out in the nose and palate alike, particularly in the finish, which blooms with rye grain along with thick corn and clean oak. For all its firm, brusque character, VOB 100 does not show a great amount of oak. Barton prefers to bottle the stuff young, so as to “taste everything that went into the barrel, with a high percentage of small grains,” and without too much interference from the barrel. I admire their grain-based, minimalist approach. It is great fun to drink VOB 100 straight up, but there is rather more complexity to the rye in the aroma with a splash of water. This is as good a buy as you will find in the entire Bourbon category. —JE
